Harley the Painted Dog: A Funny and Heartfelt Book for Kids About Belonging and Self-Acceptance by Chelsea Paulus

Harley made a curious TAP, and the color from his paws went SPLAT! Harley the Painted Dog is an uplifting children’s picture book that encourages young readers to embrace what makes them unique.

Harley wants to fit in—maybe then, other dogs will want to play with him. But fitting in isn’t easy when you’re a playful, colorful puppy living in a serious, black-and-white world. Through a heartfelt (and humorous) exploration of belonging, the story introduces children to the significance of color, emotional change, and self-acceptance.

"This harmonious blend of uplifting storytelling and cheerful illustrations is a heartening ode to uniqueness. A funny, heartfelt tale that creatively encourages kids to embrace their differences." —Kirkus Reviews

Perfect for ages 2–7 (Preschool–Grade 2), this read-aloud picture book supports social-emotional learning and builds confidence in young children.

Written and illustrated by Chelsea Paulus, Harley the Painted Dog makes a thoughtful gift for kids who love dogs, art, painting, and adventurous stories.

My Review:

🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

What a beautiful read!

Four Point Five Stars

Harley the little dog lives in a black and white world. But he is different because he is colourful and he likes doing different things. He does not fit in his school and he does not know what to do.

Then when Harley goes near a river, he realizes something precious - not only was it ok to be himself, he also learns to share his 'colours' with others.

Beautiful illustrations and a lovely splash of colour and self-acceptance.
